Let's talk about Zika and the CMV infections...

I'm sure if you've been watching the news you have been hearing all about the Zika Virus. A virus carried by mosquitos found in South and Central America. If an expecting mom gets bit by an infected bug she can pass the infection on to her unborn baby.  With the infection, the expecting mom may have cold-like symptoms, fever, rash, and conjunctivitis. However, her baby could be born with something more serious called microcephalous.

However, did you know that we already have a virus here in our country that does the same damage plus more. Just like the Zika virus the CMV virus causes cold-like symptoms, body aches, fatigue, etc and it can cause an infected baby to be born with microcephalous. CMV is already in our country, in all of our states, in our communities, in our daycares, in our schools, etc. It is estimated that one child is disabled every hour from a CMV infection, but yet it never makes the headlines. No one ever talks about it.  For years, the CMV foundation has begged for more support, more awareness, and more research on the CMV/ Cytomegalo Virus. 

CMV can also cause hearing impairment, vision impairment, organ damage, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, seizures, and It can also be fatal. Yet, no one seems to know much about it. Most expecting moms have never heard of it. It can even be prevented, but most doctors fail to warn expecting moms. Every hour another child becomes a CMV statistic here in OUR country. Sad but true.

My little boy is one of those statistics. He is a multiply disabled child. He has numerous problems caused by the CMV infection that he was born with. 

Both of these infections are terrible. Both can and often do cause long term problems. We need to educate ourselves and every expecting mom about the dangers. Learn more about these viruses in the links below.
