This is so true! Our home has been blessed with some AWESOME people who just happen to be autistic. To us, it has just become a part of our every day life. My husband is high functioning and so is his oldest son. My child Blaze was diagnosed as a toddler and my youngest daughter is suspected to be autistic as well. I was told after her psychological eval that she needed further testing because it was highly likely that she too is autistic. I never took her back but I'm sure she probably is. To us, it's just a label. They don't have a disease. They don't need "fixed". They are not broken. We just say that God wired them a little differently... just the way that He wanted them to be. However, aren't we all unique and wired differently?!? I am also the caregiver of an amazing kiddo who also just happens to be autistic and he has brought so much joy into my life. When they say its a spectrum, it really is. They are all so unique and different and perfect just the way that God created them.
